The Joyful Rebel Manifesto | Why I'm Done Shrinking (And You Might Be Too)

Have you ever felt exhausted in a way rest doesn’t fix?
Restless, even when life looks “good”?
Or quietly wondered, Is this really it?

You’re not lost. You’re not ungrateful.
You might just be done shrinking.

Do you ever feel exhausted in a way that sleep just doesn't seem to fix?

Or restless, even when your days are full and life is good?

Or you catch yourself wondering, is this really it?

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. You're not lost, behind, or ungrateful.

You might just be done shrinking.

I'm Rachel Harris, New York Times bestselling author, speaker, coach, and very much a work-in-progress.

This podcast is for women learning how to stop shrinking, not by becoming someone new, but by unlearning the stories that taught us to hide in the first place. It's for women who love God, love their people, and are doing their best, but who sense that there's more to how they were meant to live.

Not bigger, not louder, just more real.

So what is a Joyful Rebel? Don't worry. Rebellion doesn't always look like burning things down. Sometimes it can look like choosing joy when cynicism or fear would be so much easier. It's telling the truth when silence feels safer. It's being fully yourself in spaces that benefit from you playing small.

A Joyful Rebel is a woman who begins to notice where she's been dimming her light to make other people more comfortable, and instead chooses freedom for herself.

She's rooted, she's radiant, she's unapologetically herself.

And no, this isn't personality based. Joy isn't bubbly—at least not always. Rebellion isn't annoyingly loud—at least not our kind.

This is posture, inner alignment, integrity.

Somewhere along the way, so many of us learned that being good meant being smaller. We unconsciously picked up or imposed on ourselves rules like: be helpful, but don't need help; have faith, but don't ask too many questions...or stand out in Bible study; be capable and step up, but don't take up too much space; be grateful, even if something feels a little off.

And here's the really sneaky part.

Fear often disguises itself as wisdom. Shrinking often masquerades as humility. And self-betrayal sometimes gets mistaken for obedience or being kind.

So we rehearse courage, instead of living it. We manage our brilliance. We soften our opinions. We second-guess our instincts–

and we call it maturity.

But deep down, something starts to ache. I know all about this ache. There have been seasons in my life where everything looked amazing from the outside. I had faith, family, work, calling, and yet, I felt strangely disconnected from myself.

Not because I was doing life wrong, but because I was quietly abandoning myself. I had learned how to show up for everyone else in my life, but not how to listen to my own inner voice. And when I did try to listen, I felt guilty.

What God started to show me—over years, not overnight—is that He never expected me to disappear in order to follow Him. In fact, He called me to become more fully myself.

What The Joyful Rebel Podcast Is and Isn't

So let me tell you what the Joyful Rebel podcast is and is not.

It's not a self-improvement show because friend, you're not a project. This isn't performative faith. No highlight-reel Christianity here. This is a space where faith and psychology sit at the same table, where story matters and rewrites are totally welcome. It's where joy is courageous, not shallow, and where identity is something we uncover, not construct.

We'll talk about things like the stories that you've been living that were never actually true, how to trust your inner-voice again, and what courage looks like in real life, not on Instagram. And how to live your legacy now, not someday.

Sometimes it'll look like story, sometimes like scripture, sometimes coaching, and sometimes real life hot mess, but it will always be human, grounded, and honest.

The Joyful Rebel Manifesto

About a year ago, during a season that I now recognize as a StoryShift™, I was a new empty-nester after homeschooling for 16 years. And I found myself asking that familiar whole-of-life question, who am I now? I wrote what I call the Joyful Rebel Manifesto.

It's not a list of goals, it's a way of living. A returning. A remembering. It's who I'm choosing to be on purpose when fear doesn't get the microphone or hold the pen.

I wanna speak it over you and over myself. And I encourage you to let what resonates stay, and change what doesn't fit so that it reflects the person God made you to be. Because the most important Joyful Rebel trait is straightening each other's crowns, applauding our sister's unique brand of authenticity, and lifting as we climb.

Consider this your Joyful Rebel Map.

I embrace a lifestyle of curiosity, wonder, and whimsy.

I wake up each day eager to discover treasures God has hidden for me,

ways I can grow and learn,

chances to express my creativity,

and opportunities to encourage and inspire.

I embody joy, gratitude, and faith in and to the world,

extending compassion,

fixing crowns,

and speaking life to others.

I’m on a purposeful, personal, lifelong journey,

to fight for every version of myself I have been,

to claim freedom for the woman I will grow to become,

and to discover and honor my True self now,

  the beloved daughter God created.

I walk with quiet confidence,

a woman comfortable in my own skin,

never anything less than 100% my authentic self,

and completely at peace being alone in a crowd.

I no longer play small to fit in better.

I don’t try to earn my spot,

  compare myself to other women,

or worry if the genuine encouragement, inspiration, and joy I offer is “big enough.”

As a child of God, I don’t allow outside opinions to change what I know to be true,

what Jesus tells me,

or where the Holy Spirit leads me.

I trust in His love,

and I know He speaks to me.

I’m a safe space for my people, especially my family.

Loved ones know I will greet them with acceptance,

offer unconditional love,

and speak the truth of how I feel or see things in that same love.

I also give myself love and compassion.

I’m a good friend,

  I have clear, defined boundaries,

  I’m available when needed,

  I honor my commitments,

I admit my faults and apologize with ownership,

and my advice is both prompted and given without expectations.

I have no cherished outcomes.

I run towards the Roar,

  practice imperfection,

  value progress,

  believe life is an adventure,

and failures are opportunities to grow.

Fear doesn’t dictate my actions or my interests.

I see beauty in the world,

and I count my blessings,

I steward what is within my ability to manage,

and I trust God with everything else.

I welcome the peace that comes with surrender.

I release should,

challenge thinking traps,

embrace emotional honesty,

exchange fear for agency,

and name my fears, removing their power.

I am resilient when life quakes.

I don’t doubt my mind,

I trust my intuition,

and though life is often messy and imperfect, I show up anyway.

I live my values, with a firm foundation of faith and always putting family first.

  I treasure my unique magic,

and I treat my mind, body, and soul with care.

I’m a Joyful Rebel and Sacred Wanderer.

I am loved.

Friend, if even one line of that lit something up inside of you, good.

That holy fire in your belly?

That zing in your blood, the prickles on your skin?

That's your soul speaking.

Thoughts To Ponder

So let me ask you something, as someone who's been there:

  • Where have you learned to shrink?

  • What part of you has been waiting patiently to be invited back into the room?

You don't have to answer that today. Just start noticing. Awareness is the first act of courage.

Permission Slips

Toward the end of every episode, I like to include takeaways to feed your soul and spark more joy. I call them Permission Slips, not because you need permission, but as a reminder that you already have it.

So here are your slips for this week:

  • You don't have to fix yourself.

  • You don't have to figure out your whole life.

  • You don't have to become someone new.

  • You are allowed to remember who you already are.

I'm so glad you're here, friend.

If this episode resonated, if it stirred something in you, you don't have to rush to do anything with it.

Simply noticing is enough for today.

But if it does help, I created a simple free resource to support this work.

A place to slow down, reflect, and begin noticing the stories that are shaping your life.

You'll find the link below when you're ready.

And if you'd like to keep walking this journey together, I'd love for you to subscribe or share this episode with someone who might need it.

Next week, we're talking about identity. Who you were before the world told you who to be.

Until then...Notice joy.

Live messy and real.

And don't shrink or dim that beautiful light.

I'll see you next time.

🎁Free Resource: I created a simple, reflective guide to help you begin noticing the stories shaping your life. You’ll find the link in the show notes when you’re ready.
